Gem Club

The songs of Gem Club‘s six-song 2010 EP Acid and Everything used piano, cello and vocals, but more than that they used space... taking a similar route as James Blake on his debut album.  Christopher Barnes and Kristen Drymala spread their elements across the stereo field, allowing their solemn piano chords and the cello’s plaintive counterpinings to echo across some limitless space.  As a result, Acid and Everything‘s songs come off like a melancholy dream.  Indie label Hardly Art took notice, and late last month they signed Gem Club, who have now added vocalist Leva Berberian. On September 27, the trio will be releasing their debut full-length Breakers.

Paul Bloom: The origins of pleasure

Why do we like an original painting better than a forgery? Psychologist Paul Bloom argues that human beings are essentialists -- that our beliefs about the history of an object change how we experience it, not simply as an illusion, but as a deep feature of what pleasure (and pain) is.

Cloud Control

Meditation Song #2 (Why, Oh Why) by Cloud Control by infectiousmusicuk

Ghost Story by Cloud Control by infectiousmusicuk

They're from Australia. I've liked everything I've heard by them so far.  From the rural Blue Mountains region outside of Sydney, Cloud Control offer a pastoral variation on the modern psychedelic rock sound.

Thinking About You

This is his latest. And it turns out it's just a reference track for Bridget Kelly. More words on his features on Watch The Throne to come....!

Sampha

After listening through the five features Sampha has on SBTRKT's latest album, I had to check out the rest of this guy's shit. His flow is effortlessly refreshing on each and every feature. The track above was produced by him. The video was directed by Marcus Soderlund, whose worked with jj, Miike Snow, and The XX, among other names.

Throwback Thursday Presents: Lord Finesse

In later years, Mac Miller made his debut appearance over this beat with the song 'Kool-aid and Frozen Pizza'. All Lord Finesse fans believed Hip Hop had died.

Throwback Thursday Presents: The Last Emperor - Secret Wars Pt. 1 & 2

He's from Philly and Dr. Dre used to call him his "protege".  He was also a guest MC for the Gorillaz and would spit Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's rhymes on tour for him.  Superheroes are given their time to shine on the Secret Wars series.

Throwback Thursday Presents: Lil Zane - Ways Of The World

This has always been my shit.  Hella people say he stole Pac's flow... and he did lightweight but he's so tight to me.

Throwback Thursday Presents: Big L - All Black

Big L was, and continues to be, one of the most slept on rappers of all time. Dude was set to sign with Rocafella Records and subsequently blow the fuck up, but he got shot before the deal got finalized. Big L is on all your favorite MC's top 5 lists, so pay attention.

The Great Gatsby (Film) Feat. Leonardo DiCaprio, Dir. by Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann director of Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet is directing the film adaptation of the American classic, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. If the prospect of a third attempt at successfully remaking the book into a film weren't intriguing enough, the star-studded cast will be led by Leonardo DiCaprio who will play Gatsby. Tobey Maguire will play Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan (DrivePride & Prejudice, An Education) will play Daisy, Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) will play Tom and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) will play Myrtle WIlson. Luhrman's most recent film Australia was seriously wack and struggled to find a consistent mood the entire film. Although some of the picturesque shots were stunning. The expectations couldn't be higher for this project, especially considering what a piece of shit the 1974 version starring Robert Redford was. The film will be in 3D... yet I cannot think of a single scene that it is necessary for in the entire novel. I expect it is a studio decision that will allow them to charge an extra 3 or 4 dollars in theaters.  Let's hope for the best.

Stevie and Sam - Kama Sutra II

Oh you haven't heard yet? Stevie and Sam are without doubts in the on deck circle. Hot off the release of Kama Sutra I and Fix You Remix, comes the latest track, Kama Sutra II and the accompanying visuals. The hype continues to build for the upcoming records Good Winter and Swimsuits. The moment those two records drop, these two dudes are gonna blow up. Quote me on that.

Björk - Crystalline

Björk is easily one of the most eccentric figures in music, especially given her widespread popularity over the last decade. The Icelandic singer is about to drop her first album in almost 5 years this September. Her first single gets a video treatment courtesy of Michel Gondry. His name may not hold the same esteem it did before the Green Lantern, but remember this guy brought us The Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Furthermore, Gondry got his start making music videos, most notably with a young Björk back in '93.

The Weeknd's First Show @ The Mod Club in Toronto

"No cameras, no media, no guestlist." The Weeknd's first show at The Mod Club in Toronto featured a live drummer and band... and this guy's voice is no fluke.  Abel Tseyfaye did not show up to his first show leanin or on his knees... whatever he was on, it made him do his fuckin thing thing.  Though it's hard to hear much over the crowd singing with him word for word... here's the majority of the show, song by song.

He's about to perform at Drake's second annual OVO Fest 2011 in Toronto on July 31.

Drive

After being nominated for the Palm d'Or and director Nicolas Winding Refn taking home Best Director at Cannes, Drive has continued to make the festival rounds and has generated more hype at every stop. As the film festival circuit slows down, a general release date has finally been slated for release on September 16th. Usually I am not one to get excited off of pure hype and a trailer, but this movie is a little different. The director, Nicolas Winding Refn, is a part of the Danish wave invading the movie industry and was at the helm of two of my personal favorite films, Pusher and Bronson...he knows how to make stylish, bad ass movies. In addition to the crew, this movie has a hell of a cast including Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and Bryan Cranston. Apparently this film got a standing ovation at Cannes and, sorry Terrence Malick, not one boo. I'm gonna put myself out there and say don't sleep on this.

Watch The Throne Mini-Documentary

As the world patiently awaits one of the most anticipated albums of the decade, Yeezy and Jay offer the fans 10 minutes of insight into the creative process that went into Watch The Throne. The documentary includes hella developmental footage of Kanye's career since his signing to Roc Nation. These will be the artists remembered in ten years. These are the Michael Jacksons, the Jimi Hendrixs, the rockstars of our time.... The album is set to release digitally on August 1, 2011 and physically on August 5, 2011.

Russian Circles

For my first post in a quick minute, I'd like to plug for you a Chicago based band doing big things with a small line-up. Russian Circles is a 3-piece made up of guitarist/sampler Mike Sullivan, bassist Brian Cook (formerly of Botch and These Arms are Snakes, two of my favorite bands ever), and drummer Dave Turncrantz. They play sprawling, expansive, and expressive instrumental tunes, like Explosions in the Sky with balls, or Isis with feel and a soul. Their music ranges from heavy, percussive riffing to beautiful, softer passages rife with gorgeous reverb laden vintage guitar sound, massive rumbling bass, and groove-heavy, virtuosic drum performances. I'll let the music do the talking for now.

This right here is my favorite track off their 2009 LP Geneva and it pretty much epitomizes their sound. They've got a new album set to drop in October so keep an eye out. Russian Circles are signed to Sargent House Records, home of the Mars Volta, RX Bandits (RIP), Tera Melos, Red Sparowes, Hella and a boatload of other dope bands. So check em out!

Mister Bibal - Losange Jaures

Mister Bibal emailed us his new shit this week, and had this to say:

After Mister Bibal and Trueflav records are proud to announce you the release of Losange Jaures!

Sexy synths and funky rhythm is the new Mister Bibal's EP: Losange Jaures. The idea is very simple... Take "Los Angeles", write it like "Losange Les", then add the name of the street where Mister Bibal lives, "Jaures"... and you get... that's right, "Losange Jaures".

We thought this deserving of a plug.

"Ice" - Michal Ronnen Safdie

"Michal Ronnen Safdie’s photographs are noted for their diverse range, encompassing subjects from the natural world and the human subject in the center of socio political events.

Kate Shaw

My practice re-interprets notions of what constitutes landscape painting, both within an art historical context and a contemporary social context. The paintings deal with the tensions and dichotomies in both the depiction of the natural world and our relationship to it.  I am concurrently exploring the sublime in nature whilst imbuing a sense of toxicity and artificiality in this depiction. The intention is to reflect upon the contradiction between our inherent connection to the natural world and continual distancing from it.

Hopsin - Ill Mind Of Hopsin 4 (Tyler the Creator Diss)

Despite the annoying colored contacts look that this guy is still rockin, he can spit and actually goes in on this track. He's also got a tendency to go after guys on his tracks (see Sag My Pants after the jump) so it comes as no surprise that he went in after Tyler. Now, don't be expecting Tyler to respond, dude is just a little busy touring and recovering from his foot injury to have the time or even desire to hit back. Plus, responding to a diss track just doesn't come off as part of Tyler's steez to me. The funniest part of this is that the first time I heard Tyler he kind of reminded me of Hopsin. I went ahead and threw in a few bonus Hopsin tracks after the jump.

Sleep Party People - I’m The Little Bunnyman
