Recapping 2011 has been a blast. Hence my flurry of love to all you folks.
Here's one I forgot about til Youtube reminded me of my insanity:
Daphni, better known as Caribou pumped out some succulent textures in '11. Here's a taste.
With this first one we get an incredible reworking of Zimbabwean Legend Thomas Mapfumo's Shumba.
02 Daphni - Yes, I Know by Caribouband
All I can say is listen to this where you can really enjoy the bass. Yes, I know!

Tinariwen - Tassili
Where to begin...
This is one of the more fundamentally life changing musical collectives of the 21st century. There are moments in listening to music when it all disappears and you can feel an artist, when the communication breakdown ceases. Tinariwen is that kind of outfit. For a moment forgive my hyperbole and take a listen. When it comes to guitar driven-jam based-howling at the moon-spiritually charged music it doesn't get any better. This time around they collaborated with "foreigners" i.e. Tunde Adebimpe & Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio as well as Nes Cline of Wilco fame. This recording delivers in a way most other music doesn't. Its real; not over dubbed or full of computer-generated flourishes. I'll let Wikipedia lay down their bio..

Maybe an odd pair at first assessment. I dig it though. This is a retake of a 1996 recording she made. I like the new look. Manny is a machine, and its all for a good cause.

Droop-E Feat. Kendrick Lamar - Rossi Wine
A new offering from E-40's son with K-Dot to boot. Not the best lyrical work by either party but it gets the job done.
Cuban Prostitution Documentary
Interesting documentary done by a New Yorker while visiting Cuba. Obviously the director did not fly to Cuba from the U.S. (for those thinking the law has changed, it hasn't). Also, the themes that are prevalent in this short film are not Cuba specific. This sort of thing happens very commonly, to a greater/lesser extent, in a similar manner/process in the mass majority of developing countries all over the world. It is a decently done project that you should give 30 minutes to sit and watch.
Oh, and it's NSFW if you thought otherwise.
Avatar Young Blaze - Fly High
Oh most definitely. Avatar Young Blaze refuses to be dismissed. I don't know if AraabMuzik really produced this or if Avatar just went in on the beat... either way this video is dope. This clique holds it down though and I have no doubt their persistence will pay off.

Silver Swans - Video Games (Lana Del Rey Cover)
San Francisco's Silver Swans have covered the Lana Del Rey joint. The cold, vibrating backdrop gives this version an actual live pulse as the ghostly vocals are delivered on point. FRESH....and I might bump this over the original.
Lana Del Rey - Yayo
I imagine watching this live in a cigarette-smoke filled lounge, drinking whiskey. "Let me put on a show for you."
Gui Boratto - Soledad
Man I fuck with this too hard. Beautiful music from a Brazilian G. Off the album III.
The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence Album Review
In the 3rd and final episode in the sequence that is The Weeknd’s mix tape trilogy, Echoes of Silence does not fail to not only continue the essentially dark mystique that we as fans have come to appreciate in his music but to also introduce an element of transparency, including half of a verse dedicated to his mother in the song “The Fall”- a refreshing aspect that was missed in Thursday and eluded to in House of Balloons. Artist Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, has seen one of the most rapid growths in popularity amongst music junkies and is slowly cracking the underground ceiling into mainstream popularity, especially after the endorsement and an exchange of cameos on each other’s projects with fellow Toronto native and headliner Drake. Needless to say, when Echoes dropped on December 21, 2011, our dark knight had a reputation to live up to and, in my opinion, he delivered.

Johnny Jewel - SYMMETRY: THEMES FOR AN IMAGINARY FILM
SYMMETRY / THEMES FOR AN IMAGINARY FILM by JOHNNY JEWEL
If you’ve seen Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn‘s arthouse noir, you’ll probably agree that the track "Nightcall" immediately and effectively set the tone for the entire film. Music turned out to play an unexpectedly important role in the movie. Johnny Jewel, the mastermind behind Drive‘s brilliant soundtrack and part of the featured Chromatics and Desire, just released Symmetry: Themes for an Imaginary Film. At 2.5 hours long, it’s every bit as 80′s synth-driven as the real film score. Track listing after the jizza.

Soso - Who's Gonna Love Me (Ghost Remix)
Soso is Swedish. Her album's called That Time I Dug So Deep I Ended Up In China. The Ghost Remix transforms the track from icy, confessional ballad to a haunting, drum n’ bass dancefloor anthem, with ethereal electronic effects that swirl around the singer’s passionate vocals like long lost spirits in search of a medium. Album drops early next year.

Death
Moe died on October 14, 2007 at 33-years-old, after suffering a heart attack one week earlier that left him in a coma.[7] There was speculation that recreational codeine use in the form of Purple Drank may have contributed to his death.[3]

Stavrogin - Run Down
London-based Stavrogin (a.k.a Theo Darton-Moore), is a recent addition to the B.YRSLF Division roster. I may be reaching here, but it seems to me that the beatmaker takes his name from the main character of Dostoevsky's Demons, Nikolai Vsevolodovich Stavrogin. "Run Down," is the first track from Darton-Moore's forthcoming Reflections EP (artwork above). The EP is out now exclusively on Boomkat, but will be made available via Bandcamp on December 19, and through all major digital music retailers in late December.
Stavrogin - Run Down by pluggods c a v e s - Adolescent Dystopia EP
I don't know much about c a v e s other than that he is from Los Angeles. This melancholy EP is the perfect backdrop to the winter haze I find myself in. At 20 minutes it isn't a piece that will take you long to get through but it rewards multiple listens.

Blu & Exile - give me my flowers while i can smell them
This is a new collaborative LP entitled give me my flowers while i can smell them, that Blu & Exile recorded in 2009. The 15-track LP, is described as "unfinished" as well as unmixed and unmastered on their Bandcamp page. Nonetheless, given the exclaim that Below the Heavens met, this follow-up proves an intriguing listen.
Om - Conference of the Birds
I guess I missed the bell for the throwbacks. Its friday, but this groove is coming at us from 06.
Band: OM
Title: At Giza
Genre: Stoner Doom
Comment: If you've never tried hallucinogens this song might convince you otherwise
Amidst the incomprehensible rune-ish lyrics, droning hypnotic bass, minimalistic metal/jazz drumming I found myself in a dewy meadow full of dark dancing nymphs. At birth was a new way of looking at the same old thing. This song grows, dies, and grows again. God must be good for something; if its not OM I can't fathom what. Deep breathes/ slow thoughts
"If the end of the world was happening, I would want OM to be playing"

A nice little visual tale written, shot, edited, and directed by Clifton Bell. Starring Redford Stephens as the Grim reaper-esque homie in the black hoodie. He also makes a cameo on the album.

Bon Iver - Hinnom, TX and Wash
As the year comes to an end, I'd have to put Bon Iver's self titled 2nd album in my top 5 without a question. Honestly all 10 tracks are worth posting, but I thought I'd share my favorite two. Sit back, relax, and zone the fuck out.
J Dilla - The Last Donut of the Night

Ke$ha - Sleazy 2.0 Feat. Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Andre 3000, & T.I.
I felt obligated to post this seeing how I'm probably one of the few who will ever post a Ke$ha track, no matter how dank it is. Couple questions though. What did Ke$ha say or do (or most likely show) to get all four of these guys to jump on this track? And not just jump on it, but murder it. For crying out loud, Andre is on a Ke$ha track. The fuck? But all four of these guys dropped fuego. I half expected mid-way through that Ke$ha would have dropped 16 and had the best verse on the song with the way it was going. Instead of that irony, she went with what was expected:
Rat-ta-ta-tat on your dumb dumb drum
The beat so fat gonna make me cum

Ifan Dafydd - To Me
This man Ifan really is one of the shiniest muh fuckas on the block this year. He's starting to come into his own more too... no longer drawing as many James Blake comparisons. The man of mystery is most definitely one the artists I'm most excited to hear from. Name's dope too right?

Throwback Thursday Presents: Nas - Affirmative Action
Just the most classic shit of all time. The cleanest kick on the beat. Off It Was Written.
The Copacabana
Yup....I see you Marty with the steadicam shot.
New Division - Shallow Play
The 4 piece set hailing from Riverside, California can boast 2011 as their best year yet. Blending hip hop drums and rhythms with a very distinct and fresh electronic sound has already gained this quartet a lot of critical acclaim. The bass is heavy and the production is all over the place (in a good way). Shadows was released about a month ago via Division 87. This one is called "Shallow Play." Turn that shit up.
Throwback Thursday - The Smiths - How Soon is Now
Classic. Let this run a couple times over your weekend.
George Kuchar
"There's a lot of things in life worth living for. Isn't there?"
George Kuchar is an underground filmmaker from Manhattan, NY. He and his brother Mike Kuchar began making films together when they were pre-teens. They soon became central to the underground, avant-garde film scene, screening work alongside Andy Warhol, Kenneth Anger, and Stan Brakhage. Kuchar has tought film at The San Francisco Art Institute since the early seventies and most people in this city have never heard his name. He was good friends with legendary underground filmmaker John Waters. Here is the final scene from his 17 min short film Hold Me While I'm Naked (1966).
Trust me this dude is a factor in the game. But don't expect a linear plot or nothin. Kuchar is famous for rollin with the punches and allowing the process of production take over the movie. For example the really fly actress in the scene above, Donna Kernes got sick from all the shower scenes in the movie and had to quit, so Kuchar rewrote the script to be about an actress walking of the set off a movie because she didn't want to do all the erotic shower scenes. Kuchar dubbed all of Kernes dialog.

Martina Topley-Bird - Sandpaper kisses
"The Birds part 2" is maybe my favorite track of The Weeknd's Thursday. The above track is the mostly incomprehensible sample off of 'Birds 2' and it's really clean.
Fybe:one - Irenidae
Hailing from Southwest London, Fybe:one (Greg Haynes) is multi talented. He is a capable producer, artist (see work above), graphic designer, and has many other outlets. He's recently teamed up with the Raised By Records label, who plan on dropping his tunes via 12" singles and compilations throughout 2012.
Disclosure - Tenderly
Disclosure has spent much of 2011 touring with TEED and 2 Bears and is looking to start off 2012 with a new single. This is the A side of that record set to drop in January.
Tenderly (forthcoming Make Mine) by Disclosure.Vince Staples – Gold Chain Ricky (Prod. By Michael Uzowuru)
The production on this one isn't as intriguing as Versace Rap but these two come correctly again. Supposedly they have a whole project in the works.
