Nostalgia video from San Jose's Antwon. Not sure how much of this is a gimmick. Check out an earlier video for his song Helicopter after the jump. Here is Spin magazine's description of the video for Helicopter:
The video for San Jose rapper Antwon's "Helicopter"...intercuts footage from the 1968 Steve McQueen tough guy car chase movie Bullitt, and dreamy, slo-mo footage of Olde English malt liquor, with Antwon wandering around, munching on a massive plate of food (as much Sriracha is consumed in the video as Old Gold, it seems), and chilling out with friends, including Squadda B and Mondre M.A.N. of Main Attrakionz.
The Mariah Carey sampled "Free Mind" is definitely a flame thrower club jam, ready for cats to get nasty and showcase their dopest, disco influenced dance moves. Ford & Lopatin's young robot, Joel Ford aka Airbird is finna drop his 2nd solo EP titled Romance Layers, where this cut will surely be the centerpiece. The last 90 seconds or so fizzle out, but it's honestly whatever. It's the comedown. Got me feeling like its 1986 @the club in Scarface, dancing my ass off, wearing white pants.
The 20 year old wiz out of Scotland has transformed the original (not that dope IMO) into an all smiles, dance club joint with frequent drops and the haunting, piercing vocals of the always based Grimes. This shit is hella positive and on steroids.
"Cold Nites" is the 2nd hypnotic single dropped off the ghostly wizard's new album Total Loss, out September 17th. This new material from HTDW is on some epic, lowkey progressive, floating through the clouds shit that will keep even the most civilian listeners very intrigued and wanting more. That's that shit I do like.
SBTRKT took to Soundcloud to put out this track earlier. This track just continues his pattern of innovation and pushing the envelope. No word on a project yet, but keep an eye out cause new shit from this dude will be heat.
Snoop Dogg's getting super irie with this shit. Under alias Snoop Lion, he's released this reggae track from his forthcoming Reincarnation. Snoop certainly smokes enough weed to be among the Rastafarians, so the musical transition isn't quite so shocking, but its still cool to hear Snoop change it up with a new sound.
Eaves is a seventeen year old wunderkid out of LA that's got those earth tones composing into beautiful masterpieces. Don't sleep on his EP, appropriately named Hiking Trails and is out know via his soundcloud.
I wanted to talk more about films on Plug Gods when I first put this together. I studied it in school and narrative film might be my greatest passion. Any cinephile's ears perk at the mention of writer/director 'PTA'. I am no exception. He is a bona fide master of film making, and undoubtedly the greatest living filmmaker when it comes to sound design. He wrote and directed: "Boogie Nights" (1997), "Magnolia" (1999), "Punch Drunk Love" (2002), "There Will Be Blood" (2007) and now we await... "The Master". Each and every one of the aforementioned flicks is brilliant. Disagree with me. Go ahead. I'll smite you before the end of the opening shot of "Boogie Nights". "The Master" is rumored to be a thinly veiled look at the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. However, Philip Seymour Hoffman (who plays the leading role of Lancaster Dodd) denies that the film is about Scientology. PTA's last film, "There Will Be Blood" examined religious fanaticism as well. The film also stars Amy Adams as Dodd's wife, Mary Sue (L. Ron Hubbard's wife bore the same name) and controversial actor (previously turned rapper) Joaquin Phoenix. The film, for the most part has been very hush hush. But we got this shit in late May...
Then in June...
Now... As with "There Will Be Blood," Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood penned the score. Anderson's joint is out in theaters on Oct. 12, and I have not been this excited for a film... well, ever.
Disclaimer: This is too future for your civilian ass.
Synth game gorgeous. 80's meets 2020's. Maximal. Huge Tune.
New shit drops September 7.
He's Russian.
NOW WAIT... PLEASE LISTEN TO THE REMIX BELOW TOO
EVEN HUGER. Fairly trill. But swaggin in a Rari on a beach too. Lots of cocaine.
Fitzroy North is a producer out of Barcelona making some funky, futuristic beats these days.. But the real talent here is director Antony Barkworth-Knight who put together an exceptional video for North's track White paint. Cool concept and radical execution.
JoJo was always passed off as a teeny-bopper wondergirl, but after a few Drake covers, she's now teamed up with Drizzy's favorite producer for an instant R&B hit. 'Demonstrate' allows JoJo to show her real talent and uniqueness, but also promises to be a radio hit. The new hair is a grown up move too..
This is clean. First Tyler track I've fucked with in a minute. Remember Toro did a remix of French last year? peep it after the jump if you with amnesia.
Blu & Exile are back with that fresh shit. New EP is out soon and this track is on that and the new album titled Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them. Blu is one of the sickest out right now and everyone's still sleeping. Don't look foolish like the rest of the masses.
I'm just waiting for this guy to stop impressing me.. Not gonna happen. Mark October 2 on your calendars, or get caught sleepin on Kendrick's good kid, m.A.A.d city.
Sir Michael decided to go in over Flosstradamus's trap remix of Lana Del Rey's 'Video Games' and its a banger. The original track slapped, but with Mikey on the verses, this shit's a hit. Dude adds a dimension previously absent in the Jet Life gang, and that's the party dimension. This one's gonna have bitches movin everywhere. Watch for Sir Mike's solo debut, Lap of Lux, due out on August 2nd.
LOL Boys are a duo out of LA that has been busy of late, with an EP on the way. This is the featured track from that EP, and its a rad jazzy joint that is super vibey. Heart Streets provide the vocals and voila, a rad track that seems appropriate on the slower summer days.
...but it's so fire. Spitta prolific tendencies make me nervous sometimes... I find myself dismissing his shit and skimming through it. This is the nicest I've heard from baby Spits in... years tho. FreEP
Kid Smpl's a 21 year producer out of that creative Mecca Seattle that's been puttin out some real art shit of late. Just last week he put out this super ethereal version of Drake's 'Make Me Proud' that's got me floating through a motherboard in zero gravity. Dude's got a real crisp sound, and with a forthcoming release on Hush Hush, he's definitely one to keep an eye on.
Denmark's Tomas Barford released this video for his first single off of the forthcoming Salton Sea, the LP that he is releasing via Friends of Friends. Barford is the drummer for a band called Whomadewho and recently embarked on some solo renegade shit, making hits like this one. Check the track and video, and don't sleep on this dude.
So Frank decided to drop this shit a week early, and is now streaming it via his tumblr. Check it out. Dude became real godly with this one. Pink Matter's my personal favorite, Andre 3000 is a ridiculous complement to Frank's style and I foresee more between them in the future. Also, check his first TV performance on Jimmy Fallon below.
Salva, the producer of Friends of Friends and Frite Nite notability, released this mix a few days ago and its a banger, filled with some rad tracks from friends like EPROM, Shlohmo and Groundislava. It accompanies an interview that he did with Playground Magazine. Check it out below and peep the track list after the jizza.
Jazz Cartier is this dude from Toronto that can do the fuckin thing. Produced by this fool Lantz, Jazz is all over this beat, and has a cool sound about him. The skate and destroy style vid is a nice touch. This dude's sophomore effort, titled Marauding in Paradise is due out soon.
Joey Fatts released this visual to accompany his track 'Bricks' off of his Chipper Jones EP. This shit's pretty real, guns and drugs and shit. Dude's been rapping for not even a year yet, but him and this Cutthroat crew got some talent. Its nice to hear proper drive-by music making a comeback. Peep the jizza for his first video effort and download link for the Chipper Jones EP.
There's been quite a bit of excitement with the beginning of the Boiler Room sessions that have been taking place intermittently between New York and LA, showcasing some fine talent in the beat scene. This week's LA episode featured the unofficial debut of Teebs and Prefuse 73's collaborative effort, Sons of the Morning. The 30 minute set is a commitment to watch, but these guys are unreal. Skip through, watch the whole thing, do whatever, but definitely check it out cause its a treat to watch and to hear.
Frank Ocean's staying in the spotlight lately. Just when I started to get nervous about Channel Orange being a flop due to the lack of attention, he makes headlines coming out via tumblr the other day and now has dropped this track, produced by Pharrell. Its a soulful classic, and an excellent reminder of what to be excited about come July 17.
This Jessie Ware track is likely gonna be this year's 'Lights,' a wildly over-remixed party jam for all the EDM folks to rave to. That being said, Starslinger does a nice job with this one, maintaining a chill, sometimes tribal sound that complements a slightly sped up Jessie Ware vocal very nicely.
Nas drops his latest album Life is Good on July 16, and this is one of the cuts from that effort. Nas is timelessly good, and this track beckons back to that mid-90s raw shit. Its always nice to hear a legend put out some solid shit to remind us spoiled listeners where this rap shit comes from.
I recently came across this video for Anna Lunoe & Flume's single off of their collaborative EP of the same name. These two hail from Australia and have got it pretty figured out. If you like the groove, check that EP.
Andy Petr, a producer out of Milwaukee, has an EP due out that is titled Obsessions and this track yesterday is a standout and my personal favorite. 'Yesterday' has some really futuristic and mechanical sounds going on that give it a unique flavor in combination with the vocal sample. This dude isn't even of proper drinking age yet, so don't sleep on him, I suspect he'll be around for a minute.
Brogan Bentley released his first single off of his forthcoming EP that is due out on Matthewdavid's Leaving Records. The gentle samples and synths combined with the easygoing psychedelic vibe of the video create a perfect summertime jam. Don't sleep on Bentley's EP, which is due out in July 10.
The 19-year old songwriter producer is from Harlem and is a former member the ASAP Mob. Industry says hes a large prospect, and this piece is dope as fuck. Produced by Hudson Mohawke.
Rock gods Muse are proving again why they are a force to be reckoned with in musical world. 'Survival' is a masterpiece that shows the true mastery of music that these dudes have. I can't speak on it anymore, the track speaks for itself.
Lykke Li's embarking on quite an ambitious task, that of releasing a Fleetwood Mac tribute album. 'Silver Springs' is the first glimpse we have of it so far, and she seems to do a brilliant job covering a track that so many people love. With her ethereal vocals and the minimal instrumental sound, Lykke Li turns in a very solid effort on this one.
96wrld is the first Lithuanian producer I've fucked with, but I'm digging his vibe. This track 'Clark' will be featured on Mondayjazz's Workers #1 compilation and it is a crunching, clicking halfstep experience, and its dope, so check it out.
Slugabed's one of my favorite producers right now. Ever since I saw him murder Low End Theory, I've been paying close attention to his releases, and he just dropped this remix of Darude's party classic 'Sandstorm.' Its a brilliant take on the song that adds his own undeniable flavor while still maintaining the most notable characteristics of the original.
