Throwback Thursday: Otis G Johnson

Detroit native Otis G. Johnson, using a rhythm-equipped Hammond organ brought us some of my favorite devotional music: Everything - God Is Love 78. The occasional “other” voicings that scratch at the periphery of the mix add a pleasantly dark touch.  You can hear the whole album on spotify... or myspace

You can follow him on twitter. Ellen Degeneres follows him. Seriously.

Gobby - Wallet & Cellphone EP

Out now via Vancouver's 1080p; with purchase you receive a bonus EP: "The Atm is Empty."
Melodic and playful techno interactions in particularly cohesive form from one of the most crucial occupiers of the freaked out sweet spot inbetween the hypothesized club/anti-club binary. Gobby’s skill for sampling anything and everything into strange and insanely funky techno loops is particularly apparent on this six track release that has eyes on ultra serene trance heights as much as the most fucked streaks of purist techno.
Somewhere beyond the historic thump of Black Dice’s rhythmic experiments and classic acid and freaked out, Gobby’s beats are both sludgey and vivid. On “Wallet and Cellphone”, Gobby comes out in particularly high spirits that affirm his desire for shredded joy rather than purposely weirded out dance obfuscations.
The circular glee of “Y Smart Car” segues into the bubbling four-four of “MaybeImLying”, casually jumped up and wobbling with a classic acid mood. “Clifford” is a giddy two minute flotational refrain with a steady 140bpm pulse under super beautiful and starry melodic sample that leads perfectly into the reverb damaged gramophone ballad that introduces “XM Whimsy”, a 7-minute almost Avanlanches zone of shuffled beats.
Gobby has produced beats for Mykki Blanco and Le1f and recenty linked with DFA’s Dan Bodan recently with a shredding remix. He’s on that “distinctly Gobby” weird-as-I-wanna-be tip with particular clarity and linear groove objectives on “Wallet & Cellphone”.

Throwback Thursday: Lou Bond - I'm So In Love - Motherless Child (Live)

Lou Bond... the boss known best for his song "To the Establishment" (also amazing and heavily sampled by the likes of Mary J Blige and Outkast)... gets loose in a little medley action seamlessly bleeding Al Green's Let's Stay Together and Motherless Child blues (popularized by Robert "Barbecue Bob" Hicks - but covered by many and began as a "traditional negro spiritual").  Lou's scatting at the beginning is especially interesting... reminiscent of Jack Black at some moments - putting a smile on your face and yet by his wailing at the end, you all but cry.  Lou Bond should be lauded as one of the great soul artists of the 60s and 70s but is actually fairly slept on.  His conscious strumming and wailing is perhaps a political response to Bill Withers.

Throwback Thursday: Ann Sorel - L'amour à plusieurs

1972.  Okay so you might be able to tell a little bit from her tone, but the lyrics to this joint are about "making love to many".  She speaks to her lover who she realizes she desires most but is likely making love to someone else in the room and she questions if "making love with many is good for the heart".  French composer Jean-Claude Vannier did his thing with the strings on this one... giving them a piercing oriental sound.

Throwback Thursday: Tubeway Army - Are 'friends' electric?

One of my favorite new shows is "Halt and Catch Fire" on AMC.  It's a fictionalized depiction of the personalized computer revolution and takes place in the early 80s.  The soundtrack to the show is some really great synth heavy 80s shit.  Tubeway Army dropped this track in 79 acctually but it's about as 80s synth banger as you can get.  The London based group was really masterminded by Gary Numan, the lead singer, song writer and producer. But they were definitely pioneering a new wave sound out of a punk era.

Throwback Thursday: Tony Allen and The Afro Messengers - Love Is A Natural Thing

This track is from "Tony Allen And The Afro Messengers - No Discrimination"
Recorded in 1979 at Phonogram's Studio in Lagos - originally released on Shanu Olu Records. [ Grandstar, GSLP (LP) 1012 Nigeria 1979 ]... Tony Allen is maybe the greatest drummer of the 20th century. So hopefully you've heard some stuff by him.  He was born in Nigeria in 1940 and rose to fame as Fela Kuti's drummer and creative director in the late 60s and 70s.  Fela said once that "without Tony Allen there would be no afrobeat". Pioneers. Happy Thursday.

The Rover (dir. by David Michôd)

Last night I saw "The Rover" at Laemmle's Music Hall in Beverly Hills.  It was flameski.  Being a terrific fan of David Michôd's "Animal Kingdom", I was eager to see literally anything he might put out.  Guy Pearce is a legend... lets not fart about it, but my favorite film sees him in a 19th century placed, Australian, Noir, 'western' entitled "The Proposition".  There are immediate similarities one might draw between these films with him as leading man:  Criminal fraternity existentially endangered at gun point... men with nothing to lose... the hot dusty outback as a backdrop... and yet, Michôd's "Rover" takes place in the future.  A world (almost) laughingly washed in nihilistic absurdity until (for a few) the film's final scene.  The Mad Max apocalypse thing has been done.  And while on paper this may be diced as a narrative about revenge... it is a character driven relationship piece that finds its own way.  "The Rover" is a career redefining film for "Twilight" mega hunk, Robert Pattinson.  Half witted, bloody, and profoundly innocent he is the film's beating heart among a cast of characters so cold, desperate and noir it makes you cringe.  Scoot McNairy plays a moving performance as Pattinson's brother.  The sound design/score in the film is incredible too.  The score for the film was composed by Antony Partos and performed by sound designer Sam Petty. (They both also masterminded the sounds for Michôd's "Animal Kingdom.")  I've got the score for stream below...

geoff tallman - Night Of The Sentinels II

This is the dopest track I heard last week. It had me in a new spot. So Geoff Tallman is with Fauve Collective... a collective of artists (mostly producers).  I know... I wanted to hear more too:

Oh and there IS a Night Of The Sentinels 1:

That's a nas sample on there... the track is Purple. And dope art for all of these tracks... fuck.

MARZxLEON - L O N E R

Damn so I reposted this upon hearing it a few days ago and now it has like 30,000 plays. Not especially a plug... but a banger. enjoy. MARZ LÉON appears to be a ridiculously attractive American lady.  I followed her on insta.

L W N M W H R (lawnmowher) - stale box pizza

Always pleased to hear from the god L W N M W H R.  His shit always feels like a wild rainforest garden decorated with wind-chimes by eskimo nymphs in bikinis crying tears of milkshake.

He also just dropped this ice cold blood bath of a banger:

Yea... dude's a problem.

x‿x - pray 4 me lately

For you grimey little demons:

LA Producer.  If you wana speak it outloud he goes by "babydeth". He was fuckin wit me before I was fuckin wit him I guess.  Clean.  He need to not make boring basic dark trap tho. You can do it a lil. but do more... plz.

Anjelihs - Youniverse

Anjelihs is a clean R&B kind of foo on his miguel, weeknd sound.  He produces for hisself.  All three of his tracks on soundcloud are clean tho. His first track beneath the grapevine has 40,000+ listens... so I am boggled that today this track has been out for four days and doesnt have 1500.  My fav by him is also slept on:

Chet Faker - 1998 (NTEIBINT Remix)

This lil disco rmx. That low synth clean tho. NTEIBINT AKA George Bakalakos is from Athens, Greece... On Eskimo Recordings.  This is his most recent disco banger:

Ludacris - Party Girls (Nanpa NOIR Remix) w/ KR$CHN & BeatsByCMyles

Coo lil remix of this Jeremih, Ludacris joint. Been a big fan of Chicago resident, KR$CHN since his Blue States - Your Girl Remix.  This new one stays on it's pop shit... but a huge upgrade from the original. I'm relatively unimpressed by the other tracks by Nanpa Noir... and while his soundcloud insists that we "PLAYITLOUDER"... I'm not sure that keeps his shit from being basic.  I dont even talk shit. What am i doing... but yea. BeatsByCMyles is also coming v basic. Damn, I'm a hater. Should I delete this post?

DROPXLIFE - AEXTHR

DROPXLIFE... XO affiliate outta Toronto who masterminded The Weeknd's - Initiation... continues to drop quality produced gems.  In the vein of his friend Illangelo (also a producer for the weeknd) and fellow Canadian producer Black Atlass, DROP's beats hit hard but with a clipping crunch that pleasantly stings the ear when the volume is cranked.  DROP first grabbed our attention with a track called rollxplae in 2011, when the Weeknd's buzz was biggest and any known affiliate was meat to sink our curious teeth into.  Drop also has one of the best twitter accounts... unlike the XO figurehead.

Mack Shine & J. Byrd The Low Life - Get A Fix

Seattle veteran Mack Shine sent this my way recently and it's more strong from him, but I am most interested in his track-mate J. Byrd. Shine tells me he is Seattle Rap God Nacho Picasso's cousin and the tonal similarity is uncanny.  Produced by Kase Close.  Eager to hear if the two rappers can come like this consistently. This rap game is dying.

Son Lux - Build a Pyre (Begin Again) (Video)

Children... civilians... I humbly apologize.  I have been sonned by the game.  I stand before you on a mountain, embarrassed.  Lay people, I have slept on what was possibly the most major banger of the year.  This banger also features one of the biggest artists in the world right now: Lorde.  The track is a remix to Son Lux's hit "Easy". Go head n drink the coo-lade:

Now why did I sleep? I slept because I don't read Pitchfork.  Lately my digging has been done in the cobwebs of the internet.  Small blogs, soundcloud pages with as many followers as I have fingers, tasteless bandcamp pages... I friends am an admitted hater of the mainstream.  This music game is watered... no, hosed with recycled sounds and artists that the Gods discovered years ago... only to see the game launch them into popularity when the civilian ears were ready.  Reader, you are not that civilian.  You are different.  You are prettier.  You've definitely got bitches.  The "Easy (Switch Screens)" remix is an amazing song... it may be the banger of the year. And I slept.  For this slip up I am humbled... and I can assure you that I will no longer sleep on the mainstream.  It has its place.  Forrest Gump was a banger of a flick. Give credit where it's due.  The timing of this post coincides with Son Lux's newest video that NPR premiered today. It's directed by Geoff Hoskinson, who makes some trippy shit.

Edit:
Also this new track by the beast:

Bukiko - fantasy fuel

Sentinel - hybrid

Baltimore producer Sentinel (or Sentinl) released his debut project, hybrid, a few days back, which is itself an assortment of previously uploaded soundcloud tracks. Together, these songs take on a new voice which is maybe closest, in conceit, to Logos' Cold Mission if only in the way they alienate the traditional grime palette. Yet, in truth, that doesn't begin to describe the ambition and texture of the protean forces and stuttering rhythms that shoot through hybrid.

After the jump, I have included two of Sentinel's recently uploaded tracks, that sacrifice none of the experimental nature of hybrid, but push in wholly other directions.

Four Tet - Buchla (Seven Davis Jr Remix)

SELA. - Anniversary

I have been waiting on this from the California-based Flau producer for some time. The project is comprised of an LP made up of original material and a second compilation of SELA's notable previous bandcamp releases. Stream the LP above and the compilation after the jump; read SELA's description of the project description below:
"the idea for 'anniversary' was originally conceived in 2012, and it was supposed to be a 'serious' LP with the release date being the anniversary of my first release/when i started making music (aug 21st 2011).
needless to say, this didn't necessarily happen. the cause being 'life' happening, me scrapping songs, losing inspiration, and just changing my mind in general the more time i spent trying to make this album a reality. the aforementioned took place for a little over a year, and most of the songs/song ideas that were originally intended for this LP resulted in the 3-part 'STRESS' project.
then came fall of 2013. in late july/august, my contract at my previous job ended, which (obviously) resulted in me being unemployed. this is still the case at the time of this writing (feb. 26th, 2014), but i say all this to say; after much time and money spent applying for various things in my area/surrounding cities, i soon realized that i'd be stuck at home with a bit more free time on my hands than i had previously thought.
knowing this, i decided to finally give this idea the time and attention i had envisioned initially. and now here we are. as the project started to flourish, the original theme i had in mind was a bit lost for lack of a better word (especially in terms of timing for the completion/release), but it's all fitting.
i think it's fitting because this is how all of my projects have been. i've never been good at spending a really long (long meaning 2+ months) time on anything i make. if you notice, the first half of this LP is drastically different in terms of mood/tone/production in comparison to the the second half (track 7 and up).
this is because they were all created in succession at two separate times, with me being in two different states mentally and emotionally. it's all self-expression and 'stream of consciousness'. i feel like i'm rambling, but what i'm trying to say is that although the album doesn't really follow a clearly defined theme and is more so just me indirectly paying homage to some of my favorite artists, experiences, and other various things, it's all still 'fitting' in my opinion because it is 'me'. none of it was made with a pre-planned end result in mind.

now it's time to see if any of this matters"

Foodman - Drum Desu

Noumenal Loom's latest release features Japan's Shokuhin Maturi a.k.a Foodman and his beguiling brand of experimental footwork. The album is be both a challenging listen as Foodman shirks any sense of traditional progression, with his assortment of musical ideas at points seemingly deconstructing melodic progression leaving the skeletal outline of music to show through, while also building wholly unique melodies and rhythms outside of normally forged paths.  I have included two of his recent soundcloud releases below, both of which are exemplary in their own right.

Dream Koala - Earth

I discovered the french, vegan, laptop artist, singer, Dream Koala in the summer of 2012.  He's entering a new kind of coldplayish realm lately and I can't say I've been stoked about it.  He dropped Saturn Boy last week:

It's a little too clean for me.  But hours ago the Berlin based producer gave us Earth and I may have underestimated him too quickly.  Excited for this new 5 track EP Earth. Home. Destroyed.

Aye my dude Dutch E Germ AKA Tim DeWit is very very major. You heard from the mountain tops of Olympus... and as of late pitchfork.  He was a founding member of Gang Gang Dance, and co-produced their 2008 album Saint Dymphna after a gunshot wound to his chest ended his stint as their drummer.  He also soundtracked the documentary 12 O'Clock Boys, amongst others.  He was sampled on Yeezus too? KRAKE #002

An EP highlighting the artists participating in Berlin's Krake festival, which is described in the below quote:
Krake is an annual Berlin based festival for challenging electronic music. Krake means octopus and the festival is organised in a comparable way: reaching out to selected locations during one week presenting the best in electronic music whatever style it is. The festival is not huge, not expensive, does not have big sponsoring deals or four different colour are passes.

Florian Hecker - Articulação

In his new album, Articulação, Florian Hecker collaborates with Iranian philosopher and novelist Reza Negarestani as well as legendary experimental vocalist Joan La Barbara. Read the press release for proper orientation below:
Editions Mego is proud to release Articulação, the latest work by Florian Hecker. Articulação deepens Hecker’s collaboration with Reza Negarestani, author of the libretto created for Hinge. In two distinct renderings this piece articulates a complex scene in which the two obelisks of the script - one from the perspective of nature and one from the perspective of culture - are recited simultaneously in an informational yet dramatic style.
Hinge* features the legendary artist Joan La Barbara as its main voice and is delivered in microtonal ly converging pitches with sparse sample accurate time lags, shifts and twists. The repolarizing phrasings of Hinge recall Artaud’s Theater of Cruelty as much as Beckett’s minimalist narratives. Here the listener may construct a hinge, a pendulation between the right and the left obelisks; embarking upon navigation and synthesis while tracing the chimeras of nature and culture.
In apparent contrast, Hinge** engages the disparate modalities of its sources, complicating any assimilation of their respective traits. With an insight on the complexities of Hecker’s chimerized pieces, Robin Mackay summarizes: According to psychoacoustical research, the brain functions that serve to identify the ‘what’ and the ‘where’ of a sound operate upon different timescales, a finding Hecker exploits to produce sequences in which the fine time structure of one voice is sheathed in the amplitude envelope of another, producing an entity that remains recognizable as a voice while being spatially delocalized and semantically scrambled, and which the listener must reconstruct as a unified yet impossible synthetic creature - a chimera.
Between these pieces, Modulator (... meaningless, affectless, out of nothing ...), reveals, in a structural and formal manner, the synthetic means of modulation and topological transformation that appear in disguise in Hinge**. In a sequence of short episodes and chronics Modulator celebrates the notion of sound as an Immaterial. Its syntheticness and modern generation occurring as a bottom up and top down process across different scales, exciting the human minds hallucination of objects on the basis of auditory cues, without obvious compounding of a narrative progression.
Articulação is an isolated masterpiece of text, sound and synthesis.

Lanuk - vV

Hungarian artist Lanuk has released his new album vV with the Easterdaze imprint, Baba Vanga. The press release describes the project and its lineage:
Following in the footsteps of the stripped down minimalism of Superskin's Descent, is its apparent antithesis, Lanuk's vV, part glitchy, part psychotic, with ventures into techno, only to come out in breakcore or IDM-influenced noodly mentalism, which is far from inaccessible. Then again, there are tracks on this album which are stripped down and mellow, an ethereal comedown after the buoyant juggernaut.

Jamie xx: Sleep Sound
Deaf Dancers Move to the Silence with Artist Sofia Mattioli...

“I was on a train listening to music, getting deep into it, and this girl started staring at me,” says London-based artist and poet Sofia Mattioli of the genesis of her video for Jamie xx’s “Sleep Sound.” “After a while I took my headphones off and she came up to me, started signing and then wrote me a note to say that she was deaf but could almost feel the music by my movement.” With the germ of an idea from this chance encounter, Mattioli was asked to create a video for the member of The xx and Grammy-winning producer of Alicia Keys, Gil Scott-Heron and Drake. During the course of one day, she danced with 13 members of the Manchester Deaf Centre with ages ranging from five to 27 years old, who responded to the movement of the artist and the vibrations in the air given off by the song. “The relationship between silence and music is a big part of what I am trying to express with my work,” says Mattioli. “The first kid in the video, Archie, was bliss—all of them were amazing. I hope this is a project I can develop further.”

"Girl / Sleep Sound" is out May 5 on Young Turks.

ฬเןl - down'

ฬเןl is a UK producer whose beats sound filtered through gritty vinyl only to be brought back to digital.  His sound is repetitive yet fleeting, with most of his songs lasting less than 2 minutes.  His vintage feel evokes a mid 90s memory of the exterior golden age of hip hop.  His soundcloud is deep as fuck and very laney.
