Sd Laika - Meshes

Sd Laika's That’s Harakari comes out 27 April 2014. Coupled with the release of "Meshes" Tri Angle issued this press release.
It isn’t often an artist seems to materialize from nowhere with a sound so disinterested in following any conventional rules that it inspires equal measures bafflement and astonishment, but in 2012 with the release of the ‘Unknown Vectors’ EP, Milwaukee based producer Sd Laika did just that. Taking the already alien sounds of grime music as a starting off point and abrasively twisting them into something even more unknowable, Laika had developed a sound that defied any easy categorization. 2 years later Dummy Magazine would come to refer to this record as ‘one of the most jaw-droppingly inventive debuts in recent memory and ought to be considered “the other ‘Cold Mission’” (in reference to the highly acclaimed Logos LP from 2013)’. After ‘Unknown Vectors’ Sd Laika became something of a mystery, disappearing from the scene altogether leaving behind him a small, but hardcore cult fanbase convinced they’d glimpsed something very special in those 5 tracks. It was only in 2013 when Tri Angle approached Sd Laika that a new record began to take shape. This record would end up consisting of songs Sd Laika had recorded in 2011 and 2012, songs he’d convinced himself would never see the light of day. For various reasons it looked likely Unknown Vectors would wind up being Laika’s one and only ever release, which is why we’re so excited (and as huge fans, relieved) to announce the release of his debut album ‘That’s Harakari’.

Mekele - Heaven (video)

Mekele: Heaven on Nowness.com

Nowness.com premiered the new joint-endeavor between Mekele and Melissa Matos.  Read what they had to say about the video:
“I've been working on ways to find calm and peace through sound,” explains Canadian musician Mekele, whose yearning new track “Heaven” captures the aftermath of lust and its actions. “I found myself in a very comfortable, meditated head space.” Set to the song taken from forthcoming debut album Monolith, today's video is directed by Melissa Matos and shot at the eerily isolated Bay of Fundy on Canada’s east coast, where Mekele undertakes a grueling journey inspired by Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus. “The process brought up questions about persistence and what drives us to do the things we do,” says Trusst studio co-founder Matos, whose list of Montreal music collaborators includes Grimes, Blue Hawaii and Jacques Greene; she partnered with the latter on an installation at London’s Tate Modern in May. “It was sometimes difficult to watch Meleke willingly nude and bound in pretty extreme conditions. The performance became his self-fulfilling quest.” “Heaven” marks three years of creative synergy between the audio-visual duo, also recognized for their experimental fashion videos and soundtracks for conceptual designer Rad Hourani and menswear wunderkind J.W. Anderson.

SELA. - orate

Easily one of my most anticipated projects of 2014 is SELA.'s project Anniversary, due out in April now.  SELA. AKA Sela One is a pioneer of creative, post modern beats that have an early nineties sample sensibility combined with a postmodern, repetitive focus.  The result is hypnotizing.  SELA. is 20 and from the bay area.  The kid is a genius and a clown... right now you can pre-order Anniversary for $100.00... which may or may not be a nod to Nipsey Hussle's recent sale price on his mixtape Crenshaw.  But seeing how SELA. posts almost all of his music to his soundcloud... it's probably just a joke.

Tapers - TEXT EP

Tapers, constituted by Gustav Rye and Simon Kinch, have cultivated an experimental production grounded in sampling that is fascinating as it creates unique emotive possibilities through an inter-dependence of collage. Essentially, "they use a minimal amount of musical instruments but with a large collection of tape looping and lots of rewiring effects to the tape machines" to "blend collage after collage on all the various sounds and found tapes played through rewired, (probably re- and then re-rewired) tape machines." You can hear their more recent release, Last/Green, below.

Möd3rn - 02/14 EP

Möd3rn's new EP puts forth a brand of techno-dub, occupying a space between dark dub-inflected melody and propulsive dance floor rhythms.  The dark industrial churning gives that foregrounds many of the songs is underpinned by the melody of dub which at points bubbles to the top as in "Mo 4" when the bass chords are distorted through reverb to the point that they engulf the song only to release again into dance-floor staccato.
