Russian Circles

For my first post in a quick minute, I'd like to plug for you a Chicago based band doing big things with a small line-up. Russian Circles is a 3-piece made up of guitarist/sampler Mike Sullivan, bassist Brian Cook (formerly of Botch and These Arms are Snakes, two of my favorite bands ever), and drummer Dave Turncrantz. They play sprawling, expansive, and expressive instrumental tunes, like Explosions in the Sky with balls, or Isis with feel and a soul. Their music ranges from heavy, percussive riffing to beautiful, softer passages rife with gorgeous reverb laden vintage guitar sound, massive rumbling bass, and groove-heavy, virtuosic drum performances. I'll let the music do the talking for now.

This right here is my favorite track off their 2009 LP Geneva and it pretty much epitomizes their sound. They've got a new album set to drop in October so keep an eye out. Russian Circles are signed to Sargent House Records, home of the Mars Volta, RX Bandits (RIP), Tera Melos, Red Sparowes, Hella and a boatload of other dope bands. So check em out!
