Nguyen Ngoc Loan executes Viet Cong Captain Nguyen Van Lem

February 1, 1968... This Associated Press photograph, "General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong prisoner in Saigon," won a 1969 Pulitzer prize for its photographer Eddie Adams.  Film also exists of the shooting, but owing to the more graphic nature of the film, the photograph is more widely known. Death gotta be easy, cuz life is hard...

Tyler The Creator

There's a lot that can be said about Tyler The Creator... he's gone from the fringes of underground Hip-Hop to the mainstream losing no followers really in the process.  People that don't even listen to Hip-Hop listen to him including hard-core enthusiasts, yuppies, hood figgaz, and hipsters alike.  He does seem to put girls off (apparently his shows are heavily unbalanced)... but that's even changing as he gets more and more media attention because people are starting to see the winning smile and boyish swag behind the intimidatingly deep voice and 'Tech-9 meets early Eminem'-esque lyrics (not to mention his own bust-ya-in-yo-mouth beats---- he makes his own beats or steals a popular one for a mixtape).  Tyler is next in a big way.  The 19-year old straight age from L.A. attended 12 different schools in 12 years of schooling,  I try not to cringe when people around me mention his name... it's a good thing I guess.  I've liked him a lot from the first moment I heard him, but seeing him on magazine covers on a rack with reese witherspoon and justin beiber on neighboring covers still catches me off guard.  Yours Truly conducted this interview with Tyler and I think it really emphasizes the fact that we donno shit about whats next from him and OFWGKTA. GOBLIN drops may 10th... and fuck 2DopeBoyz.

Shlohmo

The Neighborhood: SOMA // Shlohmo from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

This mini-series done by Yours Truly  mainly examines the creative process behind Shlohmo's Places EP, and he also remixed the track exclusively for their site. It’s exciting to see WEDIDIT‘s poster boy get in deep with his origins. You can purchase Places on iTunes for only $3.96.

This is the track you hear in the background of the video... it's next level shit.

Christoph de Babalon

Local Berlin artist, bringing the drum rushes to your local warehouse since the mid 90s.

This 2nd tune is way meatier, as the title may suggest. If you've never heard blasting sounds at a sketchy warehouse in Berlin, this song gives you a pretty good feel for what that's all about.

Harper Smith

I know next to nothing about the photographer that is Harper Smith. Men lie, women lie, but work speaks for itself.

Mary Anne Hobbs

All dubstep and electronic experimentalists alike should know and respect this god: Mary Ann Hobbs. The UK dj and music journalist spun the BBC 1 radio show for fourteen years and brought dubstep to the forefront of electronic music with her two hour special, "Dubstep Warz", in 2006.

Here's a glimpse of her show, exhibiting the philadelphia based dubStar, Starkey:

Tyler The Creator - Tron Cat

For those who remember the track that played for about 20 seconds whenever you'd click on the above image (advertising for Tyler's Goblin album) a little bit ago, here is the full track. In case you still don't know what Tyler is all about, I think this pretty much sums it up:

"Rape a pregnant bitch and tell my friends I had a threesome"

Sasha Funke

"Techno is what you make of it." - A self-description of the approach by Sascha Funke. He was born and raised in East Berlin, where in the early nineties, techno and house music took off. His first techno record is "The Seawolf" by the Detroit Underground Resistance (see below). Previously, he fucked with so-called Euro-dance pop. At least pop as an influence has remained a positive thing, (it still pops off in some of Sasha's tracks with the bone-dry bass drum and the sparkle baby. Sascha's got pop and techno in a good place i think though.

It Was All Good Just a Week Ago

I'm not the biggest fan of this video/song but it represents the good ol' days of the ROC. We have cameos ranging from Beans to Juelz and a very out of place Kanye.  We all throw up the diamond, rapity rapsters and old school heads alike.  In the words of Dave Chappelle, "you mythologize this motherfucker like he was the greatest dude" but I want to question this a bit so bear with me.  All of this is in light of the shaft that Young Chris has gotten and continues to get as well as the future of artists like J. Cole and Jay Elec.  Here are the thoughts and anecdotes from Choke No Joke, the Rocafella camera man (I'm oversimplifying his role because he damn sure wasn't a director).

Lou Rawls - Season of the Witch

Of you'll never find another love fame, Mr. Rawls does his thing on this track. This posting is largely influenced by the Jeremiah Jae post a few days ago (which if you haven't downloaded please do). Donuts is one of my favorite albums (shameless Charles Hamilton plug: Charles said he would listen to Donuts every day) and Mr. Yancy sampled this old Lou track on Mash and Glazed, that strange eerie "straaange" at the end of both tracks.  The original, a cover of Donovan's Season of the Witch, stands on it own as a great piece of music.

HiiiPower (preview) - Kendrick Lamar

I'm a Kendrick fan. The video looks dope. Enough said.

Fire and Brimstone - Dj Quik

This is my favorite track of Quik's new album The Book of David. The drum pattern is intoxicating.  You're going to like this (I hope).

The Divergence of Two Legends

Not to bring in an outside discussion but I think Quik's standing as an influential west coast producer warrants the comparison.  What Quik brings to this album is what another west coast producer used to bring: innovation  (this is and has not always been the case with Quik either).  Perhaps it is due to overhype; these things happen, but unfortunately (and I think I'm speaking for quite a few fans) Dr. Dre's singles have been largely underwhelming.  We have I Need a Doctor which sounds like Alex de Kids is trying to craft his own patent Khalil beat (similar to many found on Recovery) and Kush which while I admired the smoothness of the mixing did not impress (an Akon feature really?).  I have hopes for the Kendrick Lamar feature but other than that I don't expect much for Detox.

I don't want to misrepresent Quik's The Book of David, as it does have its faults and contains plenty of borish  gangsterish braggadocio, but what I like about this album is that it is the quintessential Quik I grew up on but the production has evolved.  It is not just a regurgitation of whatever popular production styles are dominating the charts right now.  It is his project the whole way through wherein he is willing to take risks.  Dre's hyper self-consciousness has long been blamed for the delay of Detox but we have applauded Dre for his willingness to take risk.  And almost every time the risk has paid off.  In 2011, we have a scared Andre Young, afraid to push music forward, unwilling to damage his legacy.  Quik, of equal laudatory praise for his contribution to hip hop (this is an overstatement but he is a legend in his own right) is able to operate outside of this because he is a legend in relative obscurity.
